When No One Speaks Up For You

Dear Reader,

Have you ever been in a meeting where you expected your boss to stand up for you...and they didn’t?

I can recall several specific instances and I still have a visceral reaction.

I would leave the meeting deflated, hurt and trying to make sense of it.

Then the justifying would kick in (with a heavy dose of judgment!)

  • My boss is new, she might not have realized that what happening
  • This particular boss is only out for herself
  • He probably didn’t even catch the comment, it was so nuanced

Empowerment in the workplace is a hot topics. This is one area where you may be giving your power away.

Story Time

The other night we were all returning home from a late weekday soccer game. We were having pancakes for dinner (as one does in these circumstances).

I’m gluten-free and the main cook, and typically, I wait until everyone else is served before I start making something for myself.

But that night, I decided to make my dinner alongside everyone else’s even when it delayed dinner for my kids after a long day.
-So I could sit down and eat
with my family.
-So I wouldn’t be the last priority, again.

This is self-advocacy in action.

Even when it hurts, remember this:
You are not the opinions of those in the room.
You don’t need your boss to save you, just like I don’t need my partner to make my gluten-free dinner.

I have the choice to make myself the priority.
And so do you.

Always in your corner,
Megan

P.S. And if you don't believe you are the priority, hit "reply" and tell me more.
