What Resistance Is Really Trying to Tell You


At the top of the year, perhaps more than any other time, we often set idealistic goals for ourselves: personally, professionally, and health-wise. They feel easy to dream up and write down.

Resistance can feel like many things:

  • A literal heaviness
  • 'I donโ€™t want to do this'
  • 'I canโ€™t do this'
  • 'Iโ€™m not ready'

Resistance is not a character flaw or lack of discipline, so please stop beating yourself up. It is your brain's intelligent protection strategy.โ€‹

Your nervous system senses change and interprets it as
risk. All it knows is that you survived with the old you in place, so it would rather keep you safe here than go there.

Our brains are wired for what feels safe, not necessarily for what is most effective.โ€‹
โ€‹
The best way to work through resistance is consistent progress.
โ€‹
If you plan to move your body more in 2026, the first step is simply to
do it.
-Even when you donโ€™t feel like it.
-Even when itโ€™s uncomfortable.
-Even when itโ€™s not your best effort.
โ€‹
You learn where your edges are. You learn what youโ€™re capable of. You learn that you can ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜.

The same is true for presence.

There is no perfect moment to be more present with your family. There is simply the decision. And over time, that decision becomes so automatic that it becomes second-nature. Technology down. Eyes up. Heart open.

Leaders often ask me about confidence:

-When will I feel confident enough to be more direct?

-When will I feel confident enough to establish my own team culture?

-When will I feel like I know how to lead my team and manage my own work?

It is built through
doing. Not through thinking, planning, waiting, or hoping.

As you take action, you collect evidence.
-Evidence that you can trust yourself.
-Evidence that you can lead.
โ€‹
Resistance dissipates when your body learns you are
safe in motion. Confidence grows when you keep your word to yourself. This is leadership from the inside out.
