Two Years In: Reflections from Megan Akatu Coaching & Culture ✨
The most fun I had:
Facilitating a multi-day retreat with women non-profit CEOs. It was everything you would expect: learning, laughter, deep connection, and leaving better equipped to guide their organizations through uncertainty.
The hardest thing I did:
There have been a few occasions where all the conferences seem to happen at once. I was in DC three times in four weeks to speak and hosted a day-long retreat in between.
When I’m “on” like that, very little else gets done. Maybe that’s just part of entrepreneurship. Maybe it means I’ll say “no” more in the future. I’m still learning the right rhythm.
What I’m still questioning:
Whether to take on contract work with a larger executive coaching organization in addition to my individual practice. My coaching style is very deep and I know that it is not for everyone. I fear the judgment of trying to fit into the "mold" of a larger organization and I’m weighing whether that’s an additional path for me.
Things I did for the first time:
- Guest on two podcasts
- Earned two new coaching certifications
- Published a white paper on the benefits of executive coaching and supporting senior leaders in decision making (especially right now!)
What I haven’t figured out yet:
Finding the right level of contract support for marketing and finances. I’ve invested in several types of virtual assistants and haven’t landed on the right combination yet. I’m still discerning what truly supports me so I can focus on the work I do best.
What I’m exploring now:
The balance of leaning into masculine and feminine traits in leadership. We all carry both sides, such as sensing vs. structure. There is an art in discerning what is needed when to be a more effective leader.
What I’m most proud of:
- Not listening when others said, “the economy is terrible” and continuing on my path to help leaders unlock their highest potential.
- Learning and asking for alone time to recharge.
What I am grateful for:
I am in awe of my network and the way it continues to support me. I am grateful to my clients for their openness, vulnerability, and trust. And I’m thankful for my partner, "business bestie," and siblings who keep me surrounded by love and encouragement.
What I will carry into year THREE:
- Checking in with myself before saying “yes” to ensure every client relationship is aligned for both of us
- Turning off work when my kids get home. I built this business for a reason, and being present with them matters most
- Trusting my intuition, even when it feels big and scary
- Creating more in-person opportunities (my favorite way to connect!)
I am beyond grateful for the trust bestowed upon me and will continue to do everything in my power to invest in my own learning, grounding, and presence practices in order to be a transformative force of authentic leadership.
Cheers to year three!
Megan
